The Place

A barn from 1885, on a Spanish land grant.

The shop has never moved. The building it sits in was already forty-four years old when the first craftsman opened the doors.

The Barn Woodshop’s hand-lettered sign beneath autumn leaves, a refinished table edge, and a caned and upholstered chair.

The building went up in 1885 on ground that had been part of Rancho de las Pulgas. In 1929 a group of artists bought three and a half acres around it and founded the Allied Arts Guild to keep California handicraft going. They kept the barn, and the woodshop started inside it that same year.

It is still a working building and not a showroom. There is sawdust on the floor and timber stacked against the wall, and a hundred years of tools hang within reach of the bench. Walk in and watch if you like.
